Schamburg + Alvisse
Marc Schamburg (Bach. Design), and Michael Alvisse (Bach. Architecture), are design entrepreneurs and in 1997 founded and established the sustainable furniture studio, Schamburg + Alvisse.
Schamburg + Alvisse pioneered the design and manufacture of sustainable furniture a decade before green standards were embraced by the construction industry. The success of up-cycling post-consumer waste plastics into high value product remains a milestone for the studio, alongside becoming Australia's first furniture manufacturer to satisfy the rigorous green timber standards of the Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC) and Greenpeace.
The work of Schamburg + Alvisse remains in the permanent collection of Sydney's Powerhouse Museum, and has been exhibited in Milan's Triennale Museum, San Francisco's Museum of Modern Art, and the Melbourne Museum. Marc and Michael have been honoured with Standards Australia's "International Design Award" and the Powerhouse Museum's "Sustainability Award". They are listed in the world's Hot 100 design studios in the Taschen book "Designing the 21st Century", and The Sydney Magazine's "100 most influential people" list for work in sustainable design.
Marc has interests in eco-innovation and business ethics and his videos about the design process for the Centre for Learning & Innovation are part of Australian high school curriculum. Design principles are expressed though furniture, jewellery, lighting, and textiles. As a collaborator with Food Wine & Design, Marc assists fund raising for children's health through events.
Michael is a regular public speaker on the power of "innovation-thinking" to build the competitiveness and problem-solving skills of companies and communities. He teaches innovation-thinking as part of Object Centre for Design's school education program, and is on the management team of Tamarama Surf Life Saving Club.
